Security used to mean isolated systems. That's changing.
Five years ago, a CCTV system was a CCTV system. An alarm was an alarm. Access control was access control. They operated separately, required separate apps, and gave you no unified view of your property.
In 2025, this has changed significantly — and the benefits of an integrated approach are substantial.
What integration actually means
Integration means two or more security systems sharing data and triggering each other's responses automatically.
Example 1: Camera + Alarm An intruder approaches your rear garden. Your CCTV motion detection triggers before they reach the door. Rather than simply recording the event, the camera triggers the alarm siren externally — stopping the approach before entry is even attempted.
Example 2: Access Control + Alarm Your last staff member leaves and arms the AJAX alarm. The alarm system signals the access control panel that the building is secured. The access panel switches to a "high security" mode — requiring both fob and PIN for entry. In the morning, the first fob access automatically disarms the alarm.
Example 3: Camera + Access Control + App A delivery arrives while you're not home. Your video doorbell (or access camera) shows you the delivery person via the app. You remotely unlock the door, the access log records the credential used, and the CCTV records the entire interaction. You re-lock remotely when they leave.
None of these scenarios require you to be present. All of them are recorded and auditable.
The AJAX ecosystem in 2025
AJAX has developed into the most capable integrated security platform we recommend for residential and commercial premises. Their 2024/2025 hardware updates have significantly extended the integration possibilities:
AJAX + CCTV integration via Ajax NVR: Ajax now offers their own NVR that integrates directly with the Hub, allowing camera events and alarm events to be linked and viewed in a single app.
AJAX + third-party integration via API: AJAX supports third-party integrations via their open API — allowing connection to smart home platforms including Apple HomeKit, Google Home, and custom automation via Home Assistant.
AJAX + professional monitoring: AJAX systems can be professionally monitored 24/7 by an Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC). If an alarm triggers, the ARC contacts keyholders and can dispatch police or a keyholder response.
UNV Uniview integration
The UNV Uniview cameras and NVR systems we install support ONVIF protocol — the industry standard for IP camera interoperability. This means they can communicate with AJAX NVRs, third-party VMS platforms, and automation systems that support ONVIF.
For a unified system, we typically install:
- UNV Uniview cameras (WISE-ISP AI, colour night vision)
- UNV NVR for local storage and viewing
- AJAX alarm system
- AJAX-to-UNV integration for event triggering
- Single mobile app for both systems (or separate apps with linked event notifications)
What about consumer smart home devices?
Ring, Nest, Arlo, and similar consumer devices are excellent for what they're designed for — easy self-installation, cloud storage, and basic monitoring. They are not a substitute for professional-grade systems in higher-risk applications.
The key limitations:
- Cloud dependency (no footage without active subscription)
- Lower-grade AI detection (higher false alarm rates)
- Limited integration with professional alarm systems
- Not accepted by all insurers for insurance-grade alarm discounts
What we recommend in 2025
For a typical South Wales home:
- 4–8 UNV Uniview CCTV cameras with colour night vision
- AJAX alarm with dual-tech motion detectors
- AJAX-integrated external siren with LED deterrent strip
- Optional: video doorbell at the primary entrance
- Single mobile app for both CCTV and alarm management
- UNV Uniview CCTV with ANPR-capable external cameras
- AJAX Grade 2 or Grade 3 alarm system
- Professional access control at all entry points
- 24/7 professional monitoring via ARC
- Unified management platform
