Why I switched to AJAX (and haven't looked back)

I've installed alarm systems for 15 years across South Wales. I've worked with Texecom, Pyronix, Honeywell, and a dozen cheaper alternatives. About four years ago I became AJAX certified — and it's the system I now recommend to the majority of my customers.

Here's my honest take after hundreds of AJAX installations.

What makes AJAX different

Jeweller™ Protocol — the wireless technology that changes everything

Most wireless alarms operate on a single frequency with basic encryption. AJAX uses a proprietary two-way radio protocol called Jeweller that operates on 868 MHz with 128-bit AES encryption, communicates every 12 seconds for fault detection, and maintains communication up to 2,000 metres in open space.

What this means in practice: tamper attempts, signal jamming, and connection drops are detected and reported in real time. Most alarm systems won't tell you about a sabotage attempt until it's too late.

The Hub is the brain — and it's genuinely impressive

The AJAX Hub 2 Plus supports four communication channels simultaneously: Ethernet, two SIM cards (2G and 4G), and WiFi. If your broadband goes down, it switches to mobile. If a SIM is blocked, it switches to the other. If all else fails, it has a 16-hour backup battery.

This redundancy is the reason I trust AJAX for high-risk properties and commercial premises.

The hardware in detail

Motion Detectors (MotionProtect / MotionProtect Plus)

The MotionProtect Plus has dual-lens PIR + microwave detection. This eliminates virtually all false alarms — a huge problem with cheaper systems. In three years of installing these across South Wales homes with pets, I can count the false alarms on one hand.

Door/Window Sensors (DoorProtect)

Magnetic reed sensors with tamper detection and optional tilt sensing. They look premium — matte white with clean lines — and the pairing process takes seconds via the AJAX app.

Outdoor Sirens (StreetSiren / StreetSiren DoubleDeck)

Intelligently designed with an LED strip that flashes during an alarm and can flash periodically as a visual deterrent. Sound output is 113 dB with anti-tamper and anti-foam protection.

Keyfobs and keypads

The KeyPad Plus supports face detection, fingerprint unlocking (coming soon), and proximity card access. The design is premium — feels closer to an Apple product than a traditional alarm keypad.

The AJAX app

This is where most alarm systems fall apart. AJAX's app is one of the best I've used in security technology.

You get real-time push notifications for every event — arm, disarm, alarm trigger, low battery, signal loss. The event log shows you exactly what happened, when, and on which device. You can manage multiple users with individual access levels. The UI is clean and intuitive enough that I've never had to explain it twice to a customer.

Honest limitations

Price point: AJAX is premium hardware and priced accordingly. A basic 4-sensor system with hub costs more than a comparable traditional wired system. That said, the reliability and features justify it for most customers.

Requires professional installation: You can't self-install AJAX for insurance-grade coverage. All our installations are carried out to NSI/SSAIB standards with a commissioning certificate.

False alarm management: AJAX's dual-tech detectors eliminate most false alarms, but like any system, it requires correct placement and commissioning. This is where a certified installer matters.

Who should choose AJAX?

  • Homeowners who want the best available wireless alarm
  • Anyone with a previous false alarm problem on an older system
  • Properties where cable installation is impractical
  • Commercial premises needing Grade 2 or Grade 3 alarm specification
  • Anyone who wants a system that integrates with CCTV, access control, and smart home

Our verdict

AJAX is the best wireless alarm system on the market in 2025. The communication reliability, the app, the build quality, and the detection accuracy are all class-leading. We're certified AJAX installers and install these systems weekly across South Wales, West Wales, and Bristol.
